Traveling usually involves a combination of high activity and relaxing in casual environments. If it was easy to pack several pairs of shoes, this wouldn’t be an issue. However, you can not always afford the space for a second pair of shoes – especially when using a single carry-on bag.
In order to pack most efficiently and still enjoy your trip, you will need a shoe that is versatile enough to handle anything you will encounter on vacation. Here is a shoe that I have found to be perfect for travel.
The Vans UltraRange Hi MTE put the comfort of a running shoe, durability of a boot and classic Vans style into a single shoe perfect for nearly any trip. At $90, it runs pricier than your average pair of Vans but after putting them on it is clear how they are built much differently. Let’s take a look at the key features which make this shoe perfect for traveling.
Without a doubt, the most important thing in the shoes you choose to travel with is comfort. Traveling, by nature, involves moving – a lot of which will be on your feet. Vans uses their UltraCush Lite midsole compound in this shoe which I can best describe as being more comfortable to walk in than my Nike Free Runs. The UltraCush Lite does so well because it feels slightly more dense and durable than a running shoe which leads to the next big characteristic of these shoes.
The UltraCush Lite has maintained its comfort over the past year and a half of my constant use and the exterior construction is equally as tough. A leather and synthetic upper exterior can breeze through a muddy hike, wet city street and nasty bar floor. After a dirty day, simply rinse and scrub them off thanks to the waterproof exterior. These shoes survived Carnival in The Netherlands. If you have ever celebrated Carnival like the Dutch do, you know how impressive that is.
While these shoes wouldn’t be my first pick for a night out, they definitely wouldn’t be my last. You can rock virtually any pair of Vans on the town, at a casual dinner or in a bar and look like a stud. This pair is no exception. They kill it on a hike and then get you to happy hour in style – a lethal combo.
From city tours to hikes to pub crawls, these shoes will take you there and everywhere between. The only thing they won’t do is warmer weather. The waterproof construction prevents airflow: great in cool weather but not ideal for the heat. Other than this, the other drawback is they are simply hard to get a hold of. When I purchased mine in December 2017, the color I originally wanted was sold completely out. At the time of publishing this, the original Hi MTE is no longer available. Perhaps this fall Vans will release more.
All this aside, the UltraRange really is a do-it-all shoe for travelers and adventurers. They are comfortable, durable and versatile enough to take you most anywhere your travels take you and make you look good doing it.
